The mission of Bar hostess Empowerment and support programme(BHESP ) is to strive for justice and welfare of bar hostesses in kenya and support them to claim their rights.
Bar hostesses are a vulnerable group whose situation is worsened by low pay (salary) and lack of viable alternatives . Research carried out by BHESP shows that most bar hostesses have had failed marriages and are now in live in relationships with new partners. The live in partners pay house rent and other utilities. the live in relationship is characterized by physical,, emotional, sexual and economic abuse, threats and isolation by the men. Due to the economic entrapment and lack of social support the victims(bar hostess) are unable to end the relationship/abuse. On the other hand ex-partners always use threat and intimidation on the bar hostesses as pay back! These are the major domestic violence abuses that bar hostesses undergo.
End violence against vulnerable women (EVAVW) is an initiative designed by BHESP to end domestic violence and other forums of violence that this vulnerable group of women are subjected to. The main focus of the initiative is to ensure that the women (bar hostesses) are sensitized of their human rights and the methods available for redress; and to empower them economically so as to get out of the economic entrapment.
