Young Widows Advancement Program is a self-help community-based organization started informally a decade ago by five young widows whose spouses had died from HIV/AIDS. All five women had been chased away from their matrimonial homes and had tested HIV positive. Because of HIV/AIDS-related stigma they met secretly to support each other through sharing of experience and organizing a Merry-Go-Round.
In November 2003 the group was registered by the Kenyan government in the Ministry of Social Services, Gender and Sports as a community-based self-help organization under the name of Young Widows Advancement Program. It is run for and by young widows
