Description:

The International HIV/AIDS Alliance is an international non-profit organisation established in 1993 to support community action in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in developing and transition countries.

The Alliance commenced its activity in Ukraine in December 2000 with a USAID-funded programme NGO Support and Resource Development for HIV/AIDS Prevention in Ukraine under the EU-US Transatlantic Initiative against HIV/AIDS. Since 3 March 2003 Alliance programmes in Ukraine are being implemented by ICF ОInternational HIV/AIDS Alliance in Ukraineь.

The International HIV/AIDS Alliance in Ukraine prioritises community support to reduce HIV infection in the population groups most vulnerable to HIV, develop community support for HIV-positive people and those close to them, reduce the stigmatisation of, and improve services for, people living with HIV and those groups most vulnerable to HIV, and identify, share and replicate best practice in most effective public response to the epidemic.

The objectives of the International HIV/AIDS Alliance+s work in Ukraine are:

  • making a significant contribution to the Ukrainian response to HIV/AIDS by supporting NGO and community based interventions;
  • implementing and supporting prevention among the populations vulnerable to the epidemic, including IDU, CSW and their clients, MSM, PLHA, prisoners, as well as vulnerable youth;
  • contributing to the development of meaningful care and support for PLHA and those affected by the epidemic;
  • strengthening local NGO support capacities and facilitating networking and experience exchange;
  • facilitating nation-wide and international sharing of good practices and successful models;
  • influencing the development of HIV/AIDS policies, approaches and practices through advocacy;
  • contributing to improvements in research and evaluation capacity to properly analyse and monitor epidemic dynamics and take adequate countermeasures.
