Non-political and non-sectarian, CARE operates each year in more than 65 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, reaching more than 50 million people in poor communities and promoting change by:
- Strengthening capacity for self-help
- Providing economic opportunity
- Delivering relief in emergencies
- Influencing policy decisions at all levels
- Addressing discrimination in all its forms
Beginning with one project in 1987, CARE's portfolio now includes over 156 projects with HIV & AIDS components in Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean. Through these projects, CARE works to prevent the spread of HIV, care for the ill and reduce the stigma of living with HIV and AIDS.
More specifically, CARE aims to slow the spread of HIV through activities that:
- Encourage prevention
- Include the input of people living with HIV
- Foster education
- Promote voluntary HIV testing
- Develop community networks to care for the sick
- Address the needs of orphans
- Provide access to and training for credit, savings and loans
CARE is a long-standing Champion of the Code:- CARE was involved in the initial development of the Code
- Madhu Deskmukh, the Director of the HIV/AIDS Unit at CARE USA, is a member of the current Code Steering Committee
- CARE developed one of the initial checklists for the Code Self-Assessment Module, focusing on Mainstreaming HIV.
